Chapter 14: Searching for Fenn

Will

Will felt murderous. He had known Fenn was up to no good and the team had been foolish to trust him. Will had done so anyway, although his copper’s instincts had been telling him Fenn was hiding quite a lot. And there was the ‘being from the other side of the Border’ issue as well—how could Will hope to understand what was driving him. Despite that though, there was something in Fenn that had called to Will on a very basic level that he hadn’t been entirely comfortable with.

For a long time, Will had wanted Alec in that way, despite it being obvious that Alec, despite sharing his inclinations, was oblivious. Over the last couple of years, Will had trained himself out of it. Alec was a good friend and it was never going to go anywhere. Will’s heart was his own again and he was planning on keeping it that way, mysterious magical visitors or none.

Fenn though. No-one else had worked up the courage to ask Fenn whether he was human, let alone male or female. He had a third eyelid, for God’s sake. After their conversation about whether Fenn was male or female back at the flat, Will had gone to Tyler. Tyler had been calling Fenn ‘they’ from the beginning. He had explained to Will about people in 2016 who were open about being neither male nor female and how you called them ‘they.’ Or he, or she, or whatever they bloody well asked you to. This seemed extremely simple on one level and extremely confusing on another.

Anyway. Will was had been revving up to asking Fenn more about it. He usually prided himself on being able to tell the girls from the boys and work out which of the chaps wouldn’t thump him if he tipped them the wink. But Fenn gave out entirely different signals than Will was used to.

It was moot now, regardless. Fenn was gone, the egg gone with him. Them. With them. Will felt let down, much more than he should have by someone that he hadn’t trusted in the first place.

He stepped into Alec’s office, pausing just inside the open door as he usually did.

“I want to find Fenn,” he announced, with no preamble, shoving his hands into his trouser pockets.

Alec looked up at him, pen in hand. “Why?” His face was blank, neither positive nor negative. “If she’s gone and taken the egg away, then that’s solved our problem for us.”

“I’m not sure it does, though. Didn’t I see Tyler in here yesterday, saying he thought Fenn had woken the Creature?”

Alec stared at him thoughtfully. “Yes. I wanted to talk to you about that.” He gestured to one of the chairs opposite the desk. “Take a seat.”

Will did as he was bid, sitting forward with his hands clasped and his elbows on his knees. “What’s happened?”

Alec put the pen down and looked at Will over his steepled hands. “Lew went to visit Mr. Kelly.
